IT Contractor: Key Considerations

IR35 Risk in IT

Large financial institutions, banks, and public sector clients frequently issue blanket inside-IR35 determinations for IT roles. Check the SDS carefully — roles with genuine substitution rights and project-based deliverables may be outside IR35.

Day Rate Negotiation

IT contractors can often negotiate higher rates to compensate for umbrella deductions. Factor in that employer NI (~15%) and levy (~0.5%) reduce your gross pay significantly — so factor this into your rate negotiation.

Multiple Simultaneous Contracts

Some IT contractors work multiple concurrent contracts. With umbrella, you can use one umbrella company for all engagements. Be aware that combined income may push you into the higher rate tax band — check with an accountant.

Limited Company vs Umbrella (IT)

Outside IR35, IT contractors with rates above £400/day typically benefit significantly from a limited company structure — the tax savings can be £10,000–£20,000/year. Inside IR35, umbrella is usually the simpler and comparable choice.

IR35 in IT Contracting

IT contractors are heavily affected by the 2021 off-payroll working reforms. Major banks, insurers, and public sector bodies often issue inside-IR35 determinations. If your contract is outside IR35 and you have a genuine substitution clause and project deliverables rather than day-to-day direction, consider whether a limited company structure would be more tax-efficient.
